Stolen camera swimmer Japan, Naoya Tomita eliminated from Asian Games
INCHEON: Swimmers Japan, Naoya Tomita eliminated from the Asian Games after admitting stealing a camera from a photographer in the pool Incheon, general team today.
Tomita, 25, who later questioned by police about the incident to apologize, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), adding it was "a breach of serious misconduct" in the main body of the disciplinary code.
"Japanese Olympic Committee admits it breaches of serious misconduct by Naoya Tomita and decided to get rid of this delegation.
"The delegation of Japan informed the police Incheon at around 6:00 pm (5: 00ptg Malaysian time) yesterday, Tomita suspected of stealing a camera in the pool on Thursday.
"The police came to us to ask for their cooperation in the investigation and they then escort Tomita to the police station where he admitted to stealing the camera," said the statement JOC.
Tomita finished fourth in the 100 meters (m) breaststroke finals on Friday.
He previously won the 200m breaststroke at the Asian Games, Guangzhou four years ago and Short Distance World Championships in the same year.
"He has apologized to us. Our make an emergency meeting of top officials and delegates decided to remove him.
"It is a violation of the code of very serious misconduct in the Japanese delegation, something that we never face all in a long time," said the JOC.
The case is not the first incident involving the police at the Asian Games when previously an official Iranian and Palestinian soccer players also face allegations of sexual assault.
